International Women’s Day 8 and 9 March: Marseilles concert focuses on African roots
Dance, music and fashion featuring artists with African roots will form the finale to two days dedicated to the celebration of International Women’s Day in Marseille, France. The event will take place at Espace Julien, Marseille, on 9 March. Performers include Sayon Bamba Camara, now resident in Marseille but originally from Guinea; Zenzi Lee, grand daughter of world famous South African singer and civil rights campaigner Miriam Makeba plus Dawta Jena & Urban Lions, a local Marseille group with a reggae feel to their music.
The concert will be preceded by music and dance from Senegal and Kenya, and a fashion show from Sadio Bee, a Paris based fashion designer born in Dakar. With a Senegalese mother and Guinean father, his work features traditional hand-made African materials, such as Bogolan cloth from Mali, with classic hand prints, complemented by designs tailored to the needs of modern urban life.
Part of the proceeds from the concert, which is co-produced by Jah Observers Productions and global communications agency Communicators Ltd in collaboration with Espace Julien, will go to charities focusing on supporting women in Africa or of African origins.
